The Conductor

André van der Merwe is a conductor and composer from the leafy suburbia of Durbanville, Cape Town. He often appears as a judge and guest conductor, locally and internationally. He is not only highly acclaimed for his brilliant conducting skill, but is also an esteemed and sort out adjudicator and has facilitated in many countries such as Britain, Sweden, Germany, Japan, China, Wales, Austria and Namibia.

André originally studied B.Mus (Performance) at the University of Cape Town, but after a hand-injury he changed his course of study and completed his degree in B.Drama (Directing) at the University of Stellenbosch. During the period 1990-1996 André acted as a director of drama productions for the Grahamstown International Arts Festival as well as the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) in Oudtshoorn. He received several national awards and prizes as actor and director.

Currently André is the conductor of three choirs, namely:

  • Stellenberg Girls Choir (since 1999)

  • Stellenbosch University Choir (since 2003)

  • Stellenberg Boys Choirs (since 2015)

SMK and USC have achieved numerous national and international acclaim.
